Certainty
A few years ago I purchased some pants. But these weren’t just any pants. A new company made these pants and included them in their “Quarter Century” collection. The company guaranteed the pants would last 25 years! AND if something happened to them, the company would repair them for free. I was set.
Eventually, I accidentally ripped the pants. So, I reached out to the company. But guess what? The company had gone belly up! My pants didn’t last and neither did the company.
Few things in life are certain. I had set my hopes on something that seemed so certain, but in the end wasn’t. In 1 Timothy 6:17 God tells us to not set our hope on uncertain things.
What are those things for you? Your health? Your money? Your spouse? None of those things are certain. All of them can be lost or taken from you. So, what should we hope in? The only certain thing there is: God himself.
The full passage of 1 Timothy 6:17 reads, “As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.”
Have you set your hope on God? If you haven’t, then you’re just like I was, hoping that my pants would last. Anything other than God will prove to be a false hope and, in the end, will rip.Â
First Timothy starts by telling us that Christ Jesus IS our hope. If you hope in your good works, you’ll always wonder if you were good enough. You won’t know. You won’t be certain. Would you like certainty? Then set your hope on Christ, the one person who was good enough.
