How do I change? Perhaps you want to change. Maybe the extra weight from college has lodged itself in your belly and will not go away. Maybe you’ve tried changing, but nothing happened.
We desire positive change. That desire explains why the Bowflex swept the nation in the 80’s and 90’s. You want to change the way you look? Great! Use the Bowflex three days a week, twenty minutes a day, and poof! Change! A new you! But the Bowflex over promises and under delivers. Why? Because we need a heart change more than we need a waistline change.
So, how do we change? Worship. Psalm 115 teaches us that we become like what we worship. If you worship an idol, you’ll become like that idol. So, we read in verse 8, “Those who make them [idols] will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.”
True heart change occurs through worshiping God. God created you for himself (Isaiah 43:6–7). If you want heart change, then change what you worship. Turn from the idol you worship (e.g., money, sex, success etc.) and turn to Jesus Christ.
When you do, you’ll find true life (John 10:10). We read in Romans 12:1–2, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
You worshiped your way into the mess you’re in, and you’ll worship your way out when you worship the one you were made for.
